VA Birders,
About 10:15 am this morning (Oct. 1), Bill Cross and I saw 2 Common
Nighthawks flying overhead at Fort C.F. Smith Park in Arlington. Fort Smith
is pretty close to being on the border of the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont,
and according to the old Blue Book (Annotated Checklist of VA Birds), the
late date in both regions is Sep. 20. Since Fort Smith Park will be included
in the VA Coastal Birding Trail, I guess this record should probably be
included in the Coastal Plain. Actually, Fort Smith Park is located on the
Potomac River between Key and Chain Bridges.
Late this afternoon, I had a Gray-cheeked Thrush stop briefly at the
birdbath in my yard.
