Saw 3 male Common Mergansers along the Potomac River
today.  They appeared to be actively feeding,
sometimes swimming with necks outstretched and bills
just under the water.  Sometimes they fed in dabbling
duck fashion with their heads submerged.  The birds
were in shallow water near Offutt Island.  This
location is just outside the Capital Beltway in
Montgomery Co., Md. and across from Fairfax Co. Va.

Two Killdeer were nearby along a stony bar - nesting?
