Having been enticed by Paula Sullivan's post of yesterday, I decided to
do some "ducking" on the Potomac, ending up at Leesylvania.
At Belle Haven Marina my "sherpa" husband and I (he's the scope-bearor)
were greeted by an adult and immature eagle sitting out from the picnic
area on the ice. Then, as we walked out to the point, there were 3
female ruddy ducks sleeping in the water near the shore and also about 5
hooded merganzers swimming among the boats with their "hoods" ALL of the
way up -- even the females. -- quite a show; never have seen that. Also,
there were about 30 common merganzers farther out on the water.
Riverside: Just gobs of ring-bills; everything is iced over there.
Leesylvania: a dozen or so com. merganzers, a couple of scaup, one
female and two male common goldeneyes still near the pier, and a
gizillion gulls and geese (Canadas of course) not too far from the jetty.
After the icy (literally - blowing over the ice) winds at Leesylvania, it
seemed almost balmy at Julie Metz where there were bunches of sparrows,
among them a beautiful field sparrow which posed very nicely in the
corner where Paula had seen the clay-colored.
A great day to be out! Edna Aaron
