We spent a quick weekend at Chincoteague and managed a decent list
considering the awful birding weather. Winds were 15-25 NE during the night
and 30-40 NE during the day. Sunday you couldn't be out at Tom's Cove,
looked like fog there was so much sand blowing.
Some highlights included 3 PIPING PLOVERS, 6 LEAST TERNS and many BLACK
SKIMMERS on the 29th at the Cove, CATTLE EGRETS all over the refuge both
days, some small flocks of BLACK SCOTERS moving north on the 29th, 1
NORTHERN BOBWHITE heard on the 29th, a NORTHERN HARRIER at Willis Wharf on
the 30th, BLACK NECKED STILTS on the causeway and in the refuge both days (2
on the causeway, 1 in the refuge), WHIMBRELS on the refuge and at Willis
Wharf, 1 LESSER BLACK BACKED GULL at the cove on the 29th, CHUCK-WILLS
WIDOWS are back, one singing on the 30th, 1 RED BREASTED NUTHATCH on the
refuge on the 30th, and 9 species of warblers including PROTHONOTARY on the
30th.
