Hello Everyone,
I started very early this morning searching for night birds along Joplin Road
along the southern border of Prince William Forest Park. It was simply cold
after getting accustomed to the mild temps of late. No Whips or Chucks yet
(road now gated), but I had a SCREECH OWL calling on one of the pull-offs.
I moved on for a twilight arrival at Hazelwood Dr in Nokesville, and found no
woodcocks displaying, nor did I hear any Grasshopper Sparrows which should be
showing up soon. I did find some decent birds there including gobbling WILD
TURKEYS, a BARRED OWL in the distance, and a plethora of EASTERN MEADOWLARKS
littering the ground.
Possum Point was decent, though most migrants must have been hunkered down
keeping warm. Highlights were: a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL in the pond on the
other side of the road from Quantico Creek (where the two Common Mergs have
been recently, but not today), 10 BALD EAGLES, two CASPIAN TERNS and a
FORSTER's TERN, and several vocal BLUE-HEADED VIREOS offering nice view up on
Cockpit Point Rd. Only warblers were a PINE and YELLOW-RUMPEDS.
After visiting a couple of other places following Possum Point, I called it a
day.
Take Care,
Jay Keller,
Arlington
