I was lucky enough to begin my day at 7:00 am on the river in a row
boat off Fletchers boat house in the Potomac River in Washington, DC. The
annual run of hickory and American shad has begun. While trying to lure the
spawning fish out of their environment for a moment I observed a few birds. The
birds I saw were coming or going into VA. I observed many of your usual fish
eating birds and others
commorant
osprey
bald eagle
black vultures
red tail hawk
wood ducks
Canada goose
mallard
gull varieties
I finished my day crappie and bass fishing out of Belle Haven Marina in
Alexandria
pied bill grebe
coot
mallard
gulls
Crazy Goose
The next observation was one I had witnessed last year at about the same time
of year. A Canada goose was violently ripping apart a fish and swallowing
huge hunks of fish flesh, I had seen this last year and thought it was a very
strange thing and maybe the goose was sick. But after seeing the same thing 2
times I think maybe female geese have a need for protein or something. Any
thoughts on this odd goose behavior.
