I met a couple of friends down at the Bellhaven picnic area this afternoon
hoping to see some of those large rafts of Canvasbacks that had been reported.
Alas, there very few Canvasbacks to be seen. We did find six or eight among a
whole bunch of Ruddy ducks just off the picnic area, but nothing else from the
bridge to as far down as we could scope from the south end of the Marina.
So I drove down the GW Parkway towards Mount Vernon to see what I could find,
and I had good luck at the Collingwood picnic area.
I found about 125- 250 Canvasbacks, along with some Ring-necked and Ruddy
ducks swimming back-and-forth about 30 yards off the shore.
Nice looks; nice photo ops.
