The following CVWO sponsored activities on the Eastern Shore this month may

June 5 Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve (NAP) Field Trip: Savage Neck
Dunes is special for its unusual secondary dune system, towering up to 50
feet. Learn how the diverse maritime plant communities on this preserve provide
important habitat for migratory birds and get a close-up look at a migratory
bird habitat restoration project - binoculars a must! Also, explore the mile of
Chesapeake Bay shoreline that supports one of the largest populations of the
federally threatened northeastern beach tiger beetle. From 9AM - 1 PM; limited
to 20; box lunches will be provided. Note: This preserve is managed as a
Natural Area; no public facilities are available. This trip is co-sponsored by

June 5 Summer Bird Census of Savage Neck Dunes NAP and related areas. CVWO,
in partnership with the Natural Heritage Eastern Shore Region is sponsoring
the first annual census of birds in these ecological important areas from near
sunrise to noon. Volunteers are needed to form 1-2 teams that will census the
birds in the 300 acres of Savage Neck, William B.Trower Bayshore (35 acres)
and Cape Charles Coastal Habitat (25 acres) NAPs. Data will be used to assess
avian usage of the NAPs and will form the baseline of a multi-year database. If
time permits, the census team can join up with the Field Trip taking place

June 19 Summer Bird Census of Parker's Marsh NAP. (Due to circumstances
beyond our control, this activity has been rescheduled.) CVWO, in partnership
with the Natural Heritage Eastern Shore Region is sponsoring the first annual
census of birds at this 750 acre bayside saltmarsh in Accomack Co. Volunteers
are needed to form 1-3 teams that will census the birds in this marsh - skiffs
and small kayaks will be provided by the Natural Heritage and Virginia Eastern
Shorekeeper Programs; marsh edge routes are also available. This activity is
expected to take place from before sunrise (for some) to about noon. Data
will be used to assess avian usage of this NAP and will form the baseline of a
multi-year database. Additional information on meeting location and times will
