To all CBC compilers and participants,
Hello all. I hope everyone is planning on getting out and enjoying a
few CBCs this year. I know I am greatly looking forward to it. I have
been asked, as the secretary of the Virginia Avian Records Committee, to
post a message concerning how write-up birds are handled by the
committee. Many of you probably know that if you see a bird that is
considered rare by the compiler of your count, he/she will require you
to provide a write up describing the bird to substantiate the sighting
as part of the count. In Virginia, some of those write-ups are passed
on to VARCOM for review if the species and area combination meet the
requirements for review. I know right now that is a bit undefined but
we are working on that. I promise! Anyway, I was asked to post a
message reminding everyone that if they submit write-up documentation
for a CBC sighting, that documentation may make it's way to VARCOM for
review. Because of a problem that occurred a few years back, I will try
to contact the submitter for all the CBC reports that come to the
committee for review to find out the submitter would like to provide
more details before VARCOM reviews the record. So, happy CBCing!
Sue
