VA Birders,
It appears we missed the Clark's Grebe by about an hour and half. We
checked Ft. Story, First Landing State Park and Lynnhaven inlet from
about 10:30 until 1:00 and then went to the CBBT for a couple hours
before checking Ned's feeders and going to Oyster for Short-eared Owls.
Ft. Story had 50-75 Bonaparte's Gull resting on the water. We did not
see any others the rest of the day. A few scoters flew by and there
were several loons (Common and Red-throated).
CBBT: There was a large (~500 birds) flock of scoters off island 1,
mostly Surf but there were Blacks sprinkled about a few White-winged
also. Many Ruddy Turnstones and Purple Sandpipers as well. Island 2
had two Common Eiders including the juvenile male and one juvenile King
Eider. Lots of Long-tailed Ducks close to the island diving like
crazy. Beautiful ducks! Island 3 had two American Oystercatchers and
we spotted the only gannets of the day (3 adults) in the distance.
Island 4 had a male and a female Harlequin Duck and a Great Cormorant
and a lot more Long-tailed Ducks.
We were not very lucky at Ned's feeders getting only the briefest of
glances at the chat. At Oyster, at dusk we did not see any Short-eared
Owls but we heard one barking as we walked back to the car in near darkness.
