VA-Birders:
I set out across the CBBT today with a friend from NC, Nate Bacheler. We
had a great day and the islands were busy with birders, and fortunately
for us, with great birds as well. We each had 4 lifers.
Highlights were 5 HARLEQUIN DUCKS (1 drake) on Island 4, 2 RED-NECKED
GREBES on Island 1 (1 out in the channel), and a gull we are reasonably
certain is an ICELAND GULL on Island 2. Nate got great photos of all the
birds and I will post to the web soon. We initially ID'ed the gull as a
GLAUCOUS, but Nate and I decided upon closer inspection that we were
nearly certain it was an ICELAND. Bob Anderson got looks at the gull later
but the ID was still somewhat uncertain when we left. Bob was calling in
Ned Brinkley for help.
Also present were more standard fare:
Red-throated Loon
Purple Sandies
Long-tailed Ducks
Scoters (surf >> black > w-winged)
Great Cormorants
Red-breasted Mergs
Common Loons
Double-crested cormorants
Ruddy Turnpebbles
Ring-billed gulls
Herring gulls
Great Black-backed gulls
Scaup
Buffleheads
Harbor Seals
