I met a photography group at Burke Lake at 645 this morning.
Some of the group pointed out a bird mixed in among some Lesser Scaup
that was clearly a different species. They asked me if I knew what it
was. I thought it was a Scoter but was not sure which one. After I got
home and looked at Shipley, it was clear from the pattern of the
feathering around the bill that it is a White-winged Scoter. I know one
was reported on the Potomac at Riverbend, but had not noticed if one had
been reported at Burke Lake.
Here's a link to my pictures. If anyone disagrees with my
identification, please send me an email off line.

We also came across two pairs of Wood Ducks just waddling along the
path. I had not experienced that before either.
