All,
Thanks to Bev L., Jon Little and Clair Mellinger, I finally got to see a
Ross's Goose this morning. In fact, three of them. I arrived at the
White Birch Estates Assisted Living Center at 9:20 and immediately saw
the birds on the pond at the end of the drive. They were mixed in with
two Mute Swans, Canada Geese, American Wigeon, Black Ducks, Mallards,
and an assortment of motley looking farm ducks. While I watched they
walked up onto the grass and began feeding. I digiscoped a bunch of
pictures and some came out pretty well though I wasn't able to get all
three in a single picture. I have one picture that shows a distinct
difference in size between one of the adults and the juvenile though.
The adults also were slightly different in size from each other. I
suspect the larger one is the male as it was demonstrating guarding
behavior that I have seen in male Canada Geese as their mate feeds. At
any rate, they certainly are cute little guys. Thanks to all who posted
about them. If anyone wants to see my pictures, I can mail them out.
Sue
