Hi,
Val Kitchens and I led 5 other birders on the Northern
Virginia Bird Club walk at Blandy today. It was windy
at times but otherwise the weather was pleasant. The
wetlands were almost completely dry. We ran into Todd
Day and Sue Heath while we were there.
On the way back a few of us stopped under the bridge
over the Shenandoah River at Rte. 622 and Rte. 50 to
look for the Cliff Swallows that nest there.
At Blandy, one birder spotted a GREEN HERON and a
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. Later on we all saw the heron
fly into an oak tree. The WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, which
were quite vocal, were seen well. Lots of swallows
were flying about, we especially enjoyed seeing PURPLE
MARTIN. The YELLOW WARBLERS were gorgeous.
At the bridge over the Shenandoah River, I saw about
about 70 (active?) Cliff Swallow nests, along with
about a dozen CLIFF SWALLOWS. They were flying into
and out of the nests and rather high over the river.
