The following were observed during the annual VSO meeting on May 4-6,
headquartered at Stratford Hall (near Montross, VA) on the "northern
neck".  The list no doubt omits some observations as I do not have all
the field lists from the almost 20 trips that covered this region. We
will issue an update when all the data is in.  The Northern Neck is an
often overlooked birding jewel in Virginia.  It has a variety of special
habitats that are essential to many species of birds.  Some areas are
protected but many are still vulnerable to creeping development.

On behalf of all participants and fellow trip leaders, I would like to
thank Sandy Spencer for doing such a splendid job of planning these
trips.  Glowing reports were received from many participants,
particularly about the Rappahannock River boat trips as well as the
trips to Toby's Point, Westmoreland State Park, Vorhees Nature Preserve,
the Wilna Tract and Mulberry Point.  Special thanks to trip leaders
Bryan Watts, Fenton Day, Bill Portlock, Peggy Opengari, Lee Adams, Sandy
Spencer, David Spears, Tom Saunders, Arun Bose, Rick Skelton, Andrew
Dolby and Fred Atwood.

Also special thanks to Teta Kain for planning and engineering this
meeting and to Bryan Watts of the Center for Conservation Biology for
the keynote address.
