Estimates are closer to 50.4 million according to ABA in 1996 but maybe =
closer to 44 million judging from the original source. This would of =
course include very casual observers. The ca. 20000 ABA members cited in =
the eaarlier post is a very considerable underestimate as there are =
thousands of professional ornithologists (and a whole lot of birders) who =
do not belong to the ABA. About the only way I can think of to distinguish=
how many serious birders there are would be to total all the miscellaneous=
bird-club members and subtract 10% or so for those holding multiple =
memberships. My guess is that it might turn out to be between 100,000 and =
500,000. (As opposed to very casual birders)
