Hello Bird Watchers,
We had an enjoyable morning kyaking on Bull Run Creek this morning. We got in
the water at Bull Run Marina (Fairfax County). Access to this marina is a more
restricted than other points along Bull Run Creek and the Occaquan. You need to
have purchased a pass from the Northern Virginia Regional Park office (I don't
know where that is) and that includes a key for the lock on the gate. A friend
provided the key and the Kyaks. The cloud cover and cool temperatures made for
a delightful morning. We saw 42 species of birds.
Highlights were: An adult Bald Eagle perched on a tree trunk about 10 feet off
the ground in a dried up pond, Green Herons (we lost count there were so many);
ditto for the Kingfishers--they were everywhere, mom Wood Duck with a batch of
little guys swimming across the creek (we also saw six young Wood Ducks who
more than likely were from the first hatching of the season, Spotted sandpipers
and Killdeers, Eastern kingbirds, Eastern Phoebes, Eastern Bluebirds, and a
Louisiana Waterthrush at eye level as it poked along the creek bank.
The topper for the morning was a male Prothonotary warbler feeding two kids. It
was quite a sight.
We were the only bird watchers on this stretch of the creek. It was just us,
some fishermen, and the birds.
