I bicycled the W&OD from Arlington to Herndon and back yesterday afternoon.
Notable to my ears were the large numbers of singing Eastern Towhees (and
of course American Robins and Northern Cardinals). What was new was a
significant number of singing House Wrens. Somewhat to my surprise, the
White-throated Sparrows are still around and singing prettily. Also to my
surprise, suddenly between roughly 3 PM and 3:30 PM, from eastern Reston to
the west side of Falls Church, I began to hear Gray Catbirds -- at least 6.
We had our FOS Catbird in our back yard last week, but it was silent.
Finally, I heard the alarm call of my first Wood Thrush as I climbed out of
Glencarlyn Park in Arlington. I am guessing that the coastal low that just
moved by brought a nice migratory push. Cheers, Steve Young, Arlington
