Today, Wed. 5/02 was a much slower day than last Sunday. We processed at
east 100 birds
fewer than on Saturday. However, there was some nice variety. We caught
our FOY RED-EYED
VIREO, and female COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. Probably our best catch was a
BALTIMORE ORIOLE
that we banded as an after second year in 2004, making him at least 6 yrs.
old. Warblers
included YELLOW, PALM, NO. WATERTHUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED, OVENBIRD, and a female
HOODED.
We had FIELD and SONG SPARROWS, but no White-throated. The day started off
well with a
GREAT HORNED OWL trying to lug a rabbit carcass off the entrance road. It
flew off when
our cars approached, leaving the rabbit behind, but the carcass was gone
when we left, so
we hope he came back and retrieved it for his family. WILD TURKEY were
gobbling and
BOBWHITES were calling, as was one WOODCOCK over by Fox Road. Other good
birds present at
the station but not caught included YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, WARBLING VIREO and
GREAT-CRESTED
FLYCATCHER. We will be open this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is
Girl Scout
day and the station will be crowded.
