Hi All,
Well, last week was a washout. Out of four projected banding days, we only
got 1 in. The
rain, cold and wind were against us. This week end doesn't look too great
either. We did
manage to band this last Wed. 4/11. By the time we left the thermometer
said 55, but it
felt colder than that. The best birds of the morning were two recaptures.
The first was
a male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER banded by us in 2002 as a third year bird
which makes him
at least 8 yrs. old. The second and even better recapture was a male
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW
banded by us as a second year bird in 2001, making him also 8yrs. old. I
checked and the
longevity record for a WTSP is 9 yrs. 8 mos., so we are hoping he will
contine to make his
migration for a few more years. The only warbler we banded was a YELLOW
PALM. There were
quite a lot of kinglets around but we didn't catch any. We banded a couple
of BROWN
THRASHERS, and a HERMIT THRUSH, so they are still coming through.
Altogether we handled
24 birds, of which 8 were recaptures. There were both FORSTER'S and CASPIAN
TERNS flying
over the creek, and our resident WILD TURKEY was roosting by the overlook
blind.
