Severe thunderstorm and heavy down-pours prevented me from
getting to the causeway at low tide yesterday. So I did not
get a chance to look for the Elegant Tern. The rain however
produced many temporary pools around Chincoteague which attracted
a good variety of shorebirds including a Baird's Sandpiper,
Stilt Sandpipers, Western, Least, and Semipalmated Sandpiper,
White-rumped Sandpipers and Short-billed Dowitcher.
If you are planning on visiting Chincoteague any time soon,
please take note that the shorebird habitat at the refuge
is virtually non-existent (VERY HIGH water levels in Swan Cove
and Snow Goose Pool). The best birding at this time is along
the causeway between Wallops Island and Chincoteague Island at
low tide.
