Just had a wonderful 15 minutes of activity in my backyard (Fairfax
Station) - my first ruby throated hummer of the season at the feeder I
put out, as usual, on the 15th of the month - this seems early, but
I'll have to look at my calendar for last year. At the same time I was
watching him on the deck, I saw a head peeking out of one of my nest
boxes. It turned out to be a titmouse, who is diligently carrying
great wads of moss in - this will be the first time I've had titmice
(?) nest in a box. Chickadees used this box once, but a house wren
destroyed their eggs - I've since moved it to another part of the yard
- hope it works for the titmice. Then on my feeder I did a double-take
on a bird and realized it was a female purple finch - I've had them on
occasion before, but it's always a pleasant surprise. Then from around
the back of the feeder came this red head, red chest and beautiful
brown-red wings - my first male purple finch for the yard! What a
great day - and I think summer's here! Happy birding.
