Greetings...
I made it out to see the Sandhill Crane reported from Augusta County today.
I arrived at around five AM, while it was still very dark. I was rewarded
pretty quickly with the bird calling. It presumably was interacting with
Great Blue Herons, as its rattle followed a Heron squawk. The sky started to
brighten a tad around the same time that George Wheaton arrived. It took
another fifteen minutes or so, but finally there was enough light, and we
both got to watch the Crane for over an hour as it danced about, sparring
with Herons. It was present when we left at about seven AM.
A few other birds seen from the same spot included a few singing Blue
Grosbeaks, a handful of Grasshopper Sparrows, Bobolinks calling from above
and from the weedy field near the pond's edge; were able to get a few of them
in the scope; and a young Eastern Phoebe hanging around the fence line near
us.
One thing worth clarifying on the directions is that you turn right on Route
693, which is about a quarter of a mile beyond where you first intersect
Route 693 while on Route 252. It took me a little while of driving on the
other half of 693 before I realized my error. Also, it is a bit confusing
when you get to Route 705 as it isn't immediately obvious that you are at the
Boy Scout Camp. 705 is also known as North Mountain Road.
Cheers...
Todd
