Well, its happened. The neo-conservative
pro-industrial policies of the Bush administration
have taken one more step towards destroying the
natural resources of this country. Although I am sure
most of you know this by now, the measure to begin
drilling in the Alaskan NWR was passed a few minutes
ago in the Senate and given the Republican majority in
the House, it will most likely pass there too. While I
hope this is not the case, I am greatly saddened by
this incident.
The measure is not even for drilling in the first
place. It is for prospecting!!! They dont even know
where the oil is and yet they are going to destroy one
of America's treasured wild places inside out looking
for it. Thousands of migratory birds rely on that
refuge as nesting grounds. I dont think the presencse
of drilling wells or the chemicals they might produce
will help matters there.
Hopefully there will be some sort of sucessful
resistance to this measure before the drillin actually
commences. Hopefully.
