I must apologize. Jesse Fulton observed the Common Moorhen at Huntley Meadows
Park on Wednesday of last week. In the rush to submit a list of the birds seen
at the Park on Monday, I neglected to acknowledge the achievement.
Had I even thought of original observations my thoughts may have wandered on
John James Audubon and his elephant portfolio of The Birds of North America,
which was published in the late 1830s. Failing that, perhaps my thoughts would
have strayed to Audubon's Ornithological Biography for the period of 1831 to
1838. The essential nature of birding is rich with unique observations.
Perhaps birding in Virginia began with Captain Smith or members of the Roanoke
community. But my money will be placed an unknown Asian who stumbled out of
the glacial mists after trekking the ice-land bridge. One thing is clear, the
tradition continues.
