If it comes to a shooting war, we are in trouble because much of our materiel
is made in China. Meanwhile, we have the world's largest Navy. Eric

Well, that's one strategy but, while you wait for it to bear fruit China is
building
it's military at fast pace.

Interesting article. It ignores, however, China's main
vulnerability--Economics.
One of the big reasons we won the Cold War was that the Soviet Union was
bankrupt. One of the major sources of Chinese taxes is manufacturing goods to
send to the West, especially the US. If we can source our raw materials, such
as Lithium from other places and make our electronics here, China will lose a
lot of its income. It will not be able to support its military, as it will be
forced to spend more on domestic issues.
The recent discussion about China's birth rate highlights this. China has been
putting its money into its military and neglecting its senior citizens in the
expectation that their children will take care of them. If they are forced to
shift funding to more Eldercare, the money has to come from somewhere.
If we focus on "buying elsewhere," especially buying domestically produced
goods, we will strengthen our economy without building more naval ships or
billion-dollar aircraft. This may not be popular with the Steinbrenner [ship
building] family or Boeing or the various branches of General Dynamics or many
of the drug companies, but it will broaden the prosperity base at home.
Any war, especially economic, can only be won if you have the correct strategy.
"Boots on the ground" is not the only way to win. Taxing the other guy's
products ends up hurting your own people and does not hurt your opponent. If
we encourage our own economy, we build our tax base and weaken his.
In 1964, one of my economics professors said that the US was going out of the
manufacturing business and into a service economy. I thought he was wrong. He
wasn't. Our present vulnerabilities are the result of this trend. We need to
think beyond stockholder dividends and reverse this trend.
Eric.
