Iraq’s F-16s grounded after United States contractor pulls maintenance crews
The departure by the U.S. weapons manufacturer from Balad air base, 40 miles
north of Baghdad, highlights the Iraqi government’s inability to rein in the
militias, which are thought to be behind attacks on U.S. interests. It comes a
year after the Iraqi prime minister, Mustafa al-Kadhimi, took power pledging to
reduce Iranian influence in the country.
That is casting doubt on Iraq’s ability to fight Islamic State militants
without substantial U.S. help, at a time when al-Kadhimi is under pressure to

Islamic State committed genocide against Yazidis: UN experts
Karim Khan told the Security Council the team also concluded war crimes were
committed by the Islamic State group against predominantly Shiite unarmed
cadets and personnel from the Tikrit Air Academy who were captured, tortured
and subjected to mass execution in June 2014.
He said an Islamic State video released in July 2015 showing the killings
"constitutes a direct and public incitement to commit genocide against Shia
