He's not shutting them down.  He's letting the market of supply and demand do
that.  Despite earlier precedents, mostly Repuglican, presidents rarely act on
labor disputes.  Eric

Why not have uncle Joe support these workers instead of threating to shut down
coal mines?

Subject: Striking coal miners

For the past four months, coal miners in Alabama have been on strike after
rejecting management's contract proposal that demanded significant give backs,
including a $6/hour pay cut, reduced paid leaves and insurance coverage, and
more.  The mine remains open and the company is doing well, thanks to the
shameless scabs who crossed picket lines. The mainstream media, of course,
continues to sanitize our language by referring to these scabs as "replacement
workers." So, instead of venting, let's do something.

For those of you who want to actually help struggling workers, start by reading
the articles listed below. Donations to the UMWA strike fund are desperately
needed. These striking miners are hurting and need our help.

UUP may want to contribute to the strike fund, but that's not enough. We all
need to dig into our pockets and make a personal donation. That's what
solidarity is all about. Here's the United Mine Workers web site:
