On January 6th, just after we arrived in a House committee room to wait out the
Capitol riot, I approached Congresswoman Liz Cheney. I started saying: “I hope
you’ll agree that the moment they clear the building, the moment they tell us
it’s minimally safe, we need to march back into the House chamber . . . and
finish certifying the election.” But before I could get out that last phrase,
she completed the sentence for me in her own way: “we need to march back into
the House chamber . . . and impeach the president.”
As you think about the guts Cheney has shown in recent weeks, and the GOP
effort to purge her from her leadership position and ultimately from Congress,
remember this: She is not a moderate Republican. I’ve found some common ground
with her in the House on national security issues, but on almost everything
else, we’ve been on different sides.
She wants the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Accords. She has opposed marriage
equality. She’s 100% pro-NRA on guns. She’s for waterboarding suspected
terrorists, just as her father Dick Cheney was when I fought him on the torture
issue during the Bush years.
If there is no place in the Republican Party for even a fiercely conservative
partisan warrior like Liz Cheney, simply because she has too much integrity to
lie for Trump or to ignore the harm his conspiracy theories are doing to the
country, then there’s no place in that party for anyone who fails the Trump
loyalty test. If you’re a Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Lauren Bobert, or some
other QAnon acolyte, you’re in. If you stood up to the former president, you
will be censured, primaried, and canceled, no matter how conservative you may
be.
I’ve been waiting to see if any of our supposedly moderate New Jersey
Republicans would utter a peep in defense of Liz Cheney, as their party tries
to take her down. I’m still waiting. Most of them probably whisper privately
that she’s right about Trump, and right that his lies about the election could
provoke violence again. But I’m guessing they’re also angry at her for showing
that a Republican leader can speak truth to their base, and making them look
weak for not doing so.
You might assume this makes me more reluctant to pursue bipartisanship in
Congress. On the contrary — it’s all the more important now for Democrats to
reach out to those Republicans who did the right thing before and after January
6th. I continue to work with such Republican partners in the House on
everything from helping veterans, to fighting corruption, to admitting Hong
Kong refugees. I remain an active member of the House Problem Solvers Caucus,
and worked with its GOP members on a compromise proposal for fixing America’s
infrastructure while speeding our transition to clean energy.
Democrats also need to be thoughtful about how we present ourselves to the
Republicans who feel their party is casting them out. I don’t see Liz Cheney
ever joining us! But plenty of folks who voted for Bush, McCain, and Romney
should be comfortable with a party that supports building on Obamacare (i.e.
Romneycare), free market solutions to climate change, reasonable gun safety
measures, humane immigration policies, and police reform (not defunding), while
standing up to Putin and reinforcing our global alliances.
Let them be the party of insurrection. Let us be the party of infrastructure.
The party of jobs. The party taking America from last to first in the world in
fighting COVID. A party for telling the truth, respecting the law, and
protecting our country. A party with which those future former Republicans may
not agree on everything, but that won’t force them to sell their souls.
With your help, that kind of Democratic Party will win again in 2022.
