In the essay being released in this email, Jeffrey Sterling writes about what
and who threatens “national security” -- from his vantage point as an African
American man who was a CIA whistleblower and spent two and a half years in
prison after a trial under the widely discredited Espionage Act.
Jeffrey went through channels to expose government wrongdoing -- only to be
later charged, convicted and imprisoned on the basis of flimsy non-evidence.
From the time that he underwent a federal courtroom ordeal six years ago that
BBC News called “a trial by metadata,” the RootsAction Education Fund has been
proud to work in solidarity with him.
We’re now equally proud to sponsor Jeffrey’s work as the coordinator of The
Project for Accountability. You’ll give him a lift if you make a tax-deductible
donation in support of that exciting
venture<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsalsa.wiredforchange.com%2Fdia%2Ftrack.jsp%3Fv%3D2%26c%3DTd1bmc4AHj5ruFU84FKiVDa6%252BFoWz2Ft&data=04%7C01%7C%7C042f02d367f8440751e908d8e3f50819%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637509988827834792%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=Es9c4%2FLjIr0WNYTZKLe0A%2FBgdssawsGzVS8BVvwDZvc%3D&reserved=0>.

[From Jeffrey:]
Though the assault on the Capitol was over two months ago, I continue to be
haunted by not only what I saw in the news reports, but also in the overall
meaning that was on stage for the world to see. Much more than a horrible
insurrection and assault on democracy, what I saw, and have been continually
reminded of, was that what happened on that fateful day was America, the usual.
I was trying to be fair in the aftermath of that horrendous scene and attack, I
thought I would see substantial and meaningful action by our elected officials,
the same ones who were nervously taking cover behind their protectors in the
Capitol, to hold those responsible for the assault accountable. A glimmer of
reasonableness was shown to me as the House voted to impeach Mr. Trump as the
inciter of the attack (the fact that Mr. Trump is the first president to be
impeached twice speaks for itself with regard to his suitability as president
during his tenure). However, the failure of our elected officials to convict
Mr. Trump and the overall response before, during, and after the attack on our
Capitol and democracy has left me with an all too familiar feeling of disgust
and frustration with where this country not only stands on race but also
accountability. As the drama has unfolded, the powerful words from James
Baldwin linger in my mind when he said “How much time do you want for your
progress?”
What Baldwin meant translates not only to racism in this country but also the
continual lack of accountability for those in power who perpetuate racial
hatred and insurrection and never have a price to pay for the damage they do
and have done to America and our democracy, that same democracy that was and
has been under attack.
The attack on the Capitol struck home with me with regard to so-called dangers
to America and how our government and nation react to them. I was falsely
labeled a threat to the national security of this country when I was not only
wrongfully indicted but also convicted of violating the Espionage Act. While
what happened to me may seem like a new sort of targeted prosecution using the
Espionage Act, it was actually business as usual for our country’s system of
justice. From the onset of the creation of this country, African Americans and
anyone who stands up for their rights and equality have been considered a
threat to national security. The all too recent heavy-handed and militaristic
responses to protests related to Black Lives Matter all over the country are
prime examples and unfortunately nothing new. Think about the numerous
so-called race riots, officially sanctioned lynchings of African Americans, the
firehose and dog attacks upon protesters during the Civil Rights Movement, and
just about every official response to racial uprisings. And allow me to present
another example, my own. When I had the audacity to sue the CIA for racial
discrimination, the government and the courts felt such a trial, an African
American fighting for his constitutional rights, a grave threat to national
security and therefore not allowed to go forward and destroy the country. I may
not have been tear-gassed or beaten with police batons, but the response is no
less the same. Truly, in the past and present of this country, attempts at
progress for not only African Americans, other people of color, and others who
dare to unite in fighting against an unjust system are considered and responded
to as threats to national security and dealt with accordingly.
What took place at the Capitol has given every indication that this woeful
trend will also be a part of the future of this country. It was right there for
everyone to see. That wild, angry, and inflamed mob did not face the same
preparation and heavy-handed response from law enforcement as has been the case
with every African American movement for justice and change throughout American
history. That mob was the right color, or more likely the wrong color that
embodies a threat to national security. As clearly demonstrated by the mob
being able to walk right into the Capitol, do their damage, and walk right out
afterward, these protestors were just good white folk merely expressing their
constitutional rights, and not a threat to national security. The extremist, if
not terrorist groups that made up the mob, like QAnon, The Proud Boys, Oath
Keepers, and others have been hiding in plain sight for years and their threat
to this nation has been clear. My question is, if what happened on that
horrible day and the indications leading up to it were not considered threats
to national security, then what is? To law enforcement and the criminal justice
system, I and African Americans in general are considered and acted upon as
threats to national security merely because of the color of our skin; however,
actually attacking and trying to forcefully and illegitimately change and
corrupt the very foundation of our nation and our democracy is not. The
disparity at the time was clear, and it has been reinforced by the official
actions afterward. Indeed, the lens of national security is color sensitive.
True, there have been some arrests, but none of the charges have been related
to sedition or national security. And those who have been arrested have been
given compassionate treatment by the courts. We’ve all seen the images of the
so-called QAnon Shaman “expressing” his constitutional rights in the Capitol.
He was arrested, but a judge ordered his transfer to another jail so he can
receive organic food. I can tell you from experience in the various jails and
prisons I have been subjected to, no such accommodations were made, or even in
consideration. Yes, a vegetarian option was available, but it certainly wasn’t
organic and certainly wasn’t palatable. Seems incarceration for those who
actually are threats to the national security of this country is not the same
for those who are considered de facto threats. And others have been allowed to
travel, even abroad, and conduct very public television interviews. When I was
arrested, the first thing the courts did was seize my passport and put every
restriction on my movement possible, I wasn’t even allowed to return home. But,
then again, that has always been the case, hasn’t it? It is just more obvious
in this instance. The charges and arrests of the other rioters have just been
more of the same, lenient. Such empathy from our justice system has never been
the case for those of the wrong color, or right color to symbolize a threat to
national security.
The obvious question is why has the official response been so lax? Other than
the obvious as I have demonstrated, the question also raises the issue of
accountability. Then-President Trump incited the mob and encouraged what
happened at the Capitol. Months of insidious and completely false claims of
election fraud ignited the fire of hatred and bigotry that his presidency
unabashedly stoked before and throughout his term. His words to that angry mob
were the very definition of sedition, yet he has not been held accountable and
likely will never be. And then there is the honorable Senator from my state,
Josh Hawley. What responsibility has he borne for also inciting that riot by
refusing to certify the electoral college outcome? None. A raised fist in the
name of insurrection and sedition by an honorable, white Senator evidently is
more well-received and respected than a black fist raised in the name of equal
rights. And now, because he is conveniently part of the Senate Homeland
Security Committee, the honorable Senator is participating in the hearing on
the Capitol security breakdown. I question the veracity and accountability of
our homeland security with riot-inciter Hawley being on that committee. The
actions of Trump and Hawley along with the other seditious lawmakers have
clearly been threats to national security. These honorable men strove to
overturn our democracy and the very foundation of this nation, yet their
movement and actions have not and will not be considered the threats to
national security they have been and are.
I say again that what unfolded at the Capitol was America the usual, and I am
very disturbed by that horrible reality. I have heard and read many proclaim
that that ugly day was not a representation of the real America. I know from
experience and our own history that what happened at the Capitol was the real
America. This is why Baldwin’s words struck me so heavily. Any view or
interpretation of progress in this country with regard to racial equality has
been of no more substance than any progression to holding those in power
accountable. The Capitol insurrection and the Trump presidency itself were an
opportunity for us and the world to see and feel what has always been in this
country. For any change to happen, there has to be an opportunity. Well,
January 6, of this year was a very revealing opportunity showing that change is
needed. But, opportunity means nothing if it is not acted upon. We do have a
new administration, but Biden and Harris should not receive a free pass just
because they are not Trump and Pence. A new administration does not
automatically mean a new America. The last time Biden was in the White House,
the Obama administration’s promise of “progress” looked and personally felt
like the same “progress” that has been a tremendous burden on those of color
and those wanting accountability in our government and country as a whole.
Biden had the time then, and the question now is how much more time will he and
those in power need?
Like so many others, I have suffered under the wait for and weight of progress
in this country. The Capitol riot has had me screaming at my country, How much
time do you want?! It is apparent that no one who can answer that question is
bothering to answer it. So many of us have and continue to be victimized by the
perfidy of national security claims and lack of accountability; unfortunately,
there is no indication it will change any time soon. Do we as a nation really
have the time to continually give those in power infinite time for progress?
The longer we have to wait, the actual threats to national security can and
will destroy this country. Foolish or not, I still have hope that the wait has
not been in vain. Neither I nor any other African American is a threat to the
national security of America, we and others fighting for progress and change
are only a threat to America, the usual.
I am fortunate to coordinate this Project for Accountability in order to reach
out to and amplify the voices out there that have the same genuinely
progressive mindset as mine which is, indeed, a threat to the national
insecurity with race and issues of conscience. I am thankful to have this forum
to challenge the status quo that was so shamefully on display at the Capitol
riot. I don’t have to be spurred to action by the inflammatory rhetoric and
lies of a former president and a current U.S. Senator because their seditious
views and conduct are the very reasons to continue asking the question about
how much time this country needs for meaningful progress. Thanks to your
support, I will continue to challenge authority, not through seditious acts of
violence, but by serving as a constant reminder of the harm that continues to
be done to this nation. I have been a victim of America the usual and I only
have a finite amount of time left to work for change. Change can happen, and if
able, I will continue to raise my voice and make this nation better than it has
been.
