Yes, we’ve been here before. The Clinton Gingrich period of massive social
economic cutbacks being the most glaring that millions of us live with today.
Our higher education academics can fill in the references.
That “fruit” was and remains those federal budget items easily accessed and
reduced.
Yes, that’s us: Social Security, SSDI and Medicare/Medicaid. That includes
trade unionists who may have decent retirement pension benefits but not always
our older brothers, sisters and neighbors. And the pressure on public unions
to yield concessions at contract negotiations times will certainly increase.
Our recent fight over privatization of Medicare is just a recent example.
Our organizations, there are a few, that represent our retirees and pensioners
need strengthen, not just financial but also with a vision of a better, not a
lesser, life after retirement from a paying job. We are all doing pro bono
work in our regular lives protecting our families and neighbors. Add this non
paying work to your daily grind.
Need I say we will have to give our Democratic Party a backbone that they
didn’t have 20 years ago. In NYS Our recent election loss of 4 House seats to
Republicans is not a good sign. NYS gave the House to the Republicans.
