Interesting article. Once you get past the "theirs will, ours may" stuff, the
final few paragraphs are important. As mentioned, Pallone reached back a few
years for his proposal. Where were the Republican proposals for the past five
years? Both caucuses have been screaming about drug prices for quite a while.
Whichever side prevails, let's get some action.
The straw man about company sponsored R&D is just that. They spend much more
on advertising than they on product development. They certainly have to pay
for trials and monitoring but a lot of the work is either government sponsored
or comes from small labs that sell to the giants, who reap the major profits.
The first part of the article focusses on the Pallone bill's attempt to level
the playing field between the prices consumers pay in other countries and the
prices Americans pay for identical products. Instead of damning this, a real
potential for bipartisan debugging exists. The only reason that the companies
can charge these disparate prices is because our government allows it. I seem
to recall that, about 15 years ago, Congress blocked Medicare and the VA from
negotiating for lower prices.
