Subject: <USS Meridian> Behind Closed Doors

Behind Closed Doors
by Frankie Wilkinson, Lieutenant Senior Grade

He made his way back to Sickbay, and replaced the coding information back into
the computer as it had been before he went looking for Mirrie.

In his mind, he knew she was leaving and it would be hard. At least he had the
chance to hold her one last time before she left. Perhaps the time away, would
clear her head and make her see the mistake she was making about the Captain.

After finishing up in his office, he headed to an empty holodeck, sneaking out
the other door, to avoid certain waiting security officers. "Computer, program
the holodeck for a rolling field, about four kilometers south-east of
Killarney, Ireland."

"Program complete, enter when ready."

As the doors opened, he saw himself in a sunny meadow, the perfect location.

The doors closed behind him and he was enveloped in the scene. Sitting in the
grass he looked up to the sky. "Computer, change the setting to night, clear
sky, with no moon visible."

As soon as he completed the request, the room darkened, the thousand pin point
lights for the stars seemed to be everywhere. Lying back in the grass, he put
his hands behind his head.

It was exactly as he remembered the day before his wedding when they sat
together in each other's company on a blanket, except she wasn't going to be
with him.

As I lay me down to sleep
This I pray
That you will hold me dear
Though I'm far away
I'll whisper your name
Into the sky
And I will wake up happy

I wonder why I feel so high
Though I am not above the sorrow
Heavy hearted
Till you call my name
And it sounds like church bells
Or the whistle of a train
On a summer evening
I'll run to meet you
Barefoot barely breathing

"I know that I cannot go where you are going, my love. You will be missed.
And until I find you again, you will be in my dreams."

As I lay me down to sleep
This I pray
That you will hold me dear
Though I'm far away
I'll whisper your name into the sky
And I will wake up happy

It's not too near for me
Like a flower I need the rain
Though it's not clear to me
Every season has its change
And I will see you
When the sun comes out again§

He lay in the grass for what seemed like an eternity, looking up at the stars,
wondering which ones she would be visiting. His eyes began filling up with
tears.

Never would he feel her soft skin next to his.
Or the love in her eyes as she looked at him across the dinner table.

Or holding her close as they sat on the couch in their
quarters.

Slowly as he stood, he sang to the sky the chorus from the song that he sang to
her at their wedding. "I love you more than the sun, And the stars that I
taught how to shine. You are mine, and you shine for me too. I love you
yesterday and today, and tomorrow, I'll say it again and again. I love you
more."§§

Wiping his eyes, "Computer, end program." The countryside disappeared to be
replaced by the yellow grid. He exited the holodeck, and returned to his
quarters.

The face he had, he felt sure betrayed his emotions. Alas, he didn't care at
that point. Finally, he made it back to the quarters and as the door closed,
he slumped to the floor, the tears now flowing uncontrollably.

He realized the good-bye wasn't going to be easy to live with.
