Hi Chess Players,
Please observe the rules carefully.
This will make the tournament run smoothly, and everybody
will have more fun.
I have relaxed the rules a little.
World Chess Parlor Ladder Rules. January 2, 2021. 1. A challenge can be made
to either of the two players immediately above you on the ladder.
A player is defined to be active if he or she is involved in
a challenge.
You cannot challenge an active player or any other
unavailable player.
If both players above you on the ladder are unavailable,
you can challenge the lowest available player above them.
To make a challenge, use the chess list, chess@xxxxxxxxxxxxx In your email,
always put the names of both players in the subject. For example, if you are
Mary Snow and playing white, say
Mary Snow Challenges John Coal.
If you are John Coal and playing black, say Mary Snow
is Challenged by John Coal.
When you challenge, propose at least two specific
times and days
that you can play.
Both proposed times must be at least 48 hours and at
most 120 hours in the future.
Two of the times must be at least 12 hours apart.
If all players above a player are unavailable, that
player can challenge the
next available player
below him or her.
In this case, the rules apply as if the challenge came
from below to the higher player.
2. Challengers take White for their first, third,
fifth, and so on, challenges.
>If the letter W follows your name on the ladder list,
you get white when you next challenge.
>If the letter B follows a player's name on the ladder
list, he or she gets black when he or she next challenges.
If the challenger implies that he has the wrong color,
that challenger
receives a "blackmark penalty."
If he implies that he has black when it should have
been white, he gets
black for this challenge, then white for his next
challenge, then black for the next, and so forth.
>If he implies that he has white when it should have
been black, he gets black this time, black the next time, white the next
time, then black, and
>so forth.
>These blackmarks are cumulative, if he keeps implying
white when it should
be black.
>3. The preferred way to keep time is to have a
third-party
timekeeper with a chess clock.
>Time control will be 30 moves in 60 minutes, and 60
minutes for an additional 30 moves, et cetera.
>
>The second best way to time a game is for one of the
players to use a chess clock.
>
>If a chess clock is not available, the player must
make each move in less than 2.5 minutes.
The better way to do this is for a third party to use
the 2.5 minute rule.
If no such timekeeper is available, the two players
will use the 2.5 minute rule.
>Warn the opponent when thirty seconds remain.
>Tell the opponent when time is up, and the opponent
must move immediately.
Best of all is to use freechess.org.
Then freechess will time the game.
Use the time limit of 20 minutes with an increment of 90 seconds.
4. A win or, while playing black, draw by the challenger
results in a swap of positions of the two players on
the ladder.
>For example, if 3 challenges 1 and wins or, while
playing black, draws, then 3 moves to 1, and 1 moves to 3.
>
>5. A challenger who loses or, while playing white,
draws, moves down one rung, if possible.
>In this case, the challenged player moves up one rung,
if possible.
>
>6. Declining a challenge is the same as a forfeit or loss.
>
>The TD may remove from the ladder a player who has forfeited.
>At a minimum, a player who has forfeited two ladder
games in a row will be removed from the ladder and will be
suspended for a month.
>
>7. If the final schedule has been arranged, e-mail to
our list with the
subject, for example, Final Ladder Schedule: Mary Snow
vs John Cole, Sunday
July 29 at 17:00 UTC.Skype.If it is freechess.org, write freechess.org.
Whether Skype or freechess, include the
Skype ID for each player and the
timekeeper, if they have a Skype ID.
Whether a Skype or freechess game, go online
with Skype, at least the day
of the game.
>This will allow the easy resolution of problems that
arise just before the game.
>
>If you cannot play at the proposed two times, reply to
your opponent and not to our list.
>This is to reduce traffic on our list.
>Send a copy to the Tournament Director, currently jamesrslagle@xxxxxxxxx.
>
>As subject write, for example, Scheduling Mary
Snow vs
John Coal Ladder Game.
>In your e-mail, propose at least two new times when
you can play.
>Both these times must be at least 48 hours and at most
168 hours in the future.
Two of the times must be at least 12 hours apart.
>If you cannot propose two such times, you forfeit.
>
>By using the above procedure, only two e-mails will appear
on our list to schedule a game.
>Zero or more e-mails will have been written to your
opponent and the TD.
>
>After a game has been finally scheduled, any player
can become the chessclock timekeeper by e-mailing our list.
>If Big Ben is the chess clock timekeeper, he should
write as subject, Final Ladder Schedule: Mary Snow vs John Coal
with Big Ben Timekeeper, Sunday July 31 at 17:00 UTC, Skype.
8. To avoid a forfeit, each player must reply within 96
hours to e-mail from the opponent.
>
>9. Both players must keep score.
>Preferably, the player should write down the moves,
for example, in braille or on the computer.
>Alternatively, the player may make an audio recording of
the moves.
>If both players make an audio recording of the moves,
some good way to count moves for time announcements must be
devised before the game begins.
>
>If a player does not keep score, he or she must ask
someone else to write down the moves.
>If both players do this, they must ask different
players to
>write down the moves.
The winnerr or, if a
draw, black, should send the score to our list.
>If applicable, the person who wrote down the moves for
the player should do this.
>The report should be e-mailed to our list within 24 hours.
>If the report is not e-mailed within 72 hours, both
players forfeit.
>
>10. A new participant starts at the virtual bottom of
the ladder.
>If the Ladder Tournament Director, currently Jim Slagle,
has given you permission to join the ladder, just
challenge one of the available players at the bottom two rungs
of the ladder.
>You will play white.
>
>11. If you believe that your opponent has violated a
rule, you must inform the Td with e-mail evidence, et cetera.
>
>12. Except for the rules given here, the rules for our
Swiss tournaments apply.
>
>13. The decision of the TD is final.
>
>14. Whoever is at the top of the ladder at 23:59
UTC/GMT
on December 31, YYYY, is declared to be the YYYY World Chess Parlor Ladder
Champion.
However, if he or she is involved in a challenge originally proposed for two
valid times this year, the result of that game will be used to determine the
champion.
>
>Starting in January, 2015, the new ladder will be
obtained by inverting the
>whole final ladder for the previous year.
>Victor Laramore was the 2010 and 2011 World Chess Parlor
Ladder Champion.
Jim Slagle was the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 World Chess
Parlor
Ladder Champion.
Viral Trivedi was the 2019 and 2020 World Chess Parlor Ladder Champion.
15. A player may notify our list,
chess@xxxxxxxxxxxxx that he or she will be unavailable for a challenge for
a period of time, not to exceed one month.
>There should be a good reason, although you need not
give a reason.
>If you are still unavailable at the end of the period,
you should remove yourself from the ladder.
>
16. A player on the top five rungs of the ladder must
be available to receive challenges every day between
December 15 and December 31 inclusive.
>If such a player is unavailable during that period, he
or she will be moved down one rung.
>
>17. A player may be given a penalty by the TD.
>Remember that the timekeeper is Acting TD so can give
a penalty.
>For example, a blackmark penalty must be given to a
player if he or she postpones a game that is finally scheduled.
>This penalty will be given no matter how good your excuse.
>
>18. Have fun!
