I would be happy to discuss the transition from sighted playing to blind
playing, but this is a bad day for me to do it on. However, the first thing
to realize that the transition may be difficult, and it will take time to
translate playing on a tactile board to the visualization techniques you
used as a sighted player. It took me about two months to make this
transition, playing in a Saturday tournament with three games each every
weekend, and receiving some coaching lessons from the local IM.
There are tactile boards, and there is a version of WinBoard that has built
in JAWS support. Google JAWS Winboard and download the program. And read
the documentation carefully. This is a version of WinBoard specifically
designed to work with JAWS so dont unload just any version of WinBoard.
Dont panic. Dont despair. Be patient, and allow yourself to make this
transition which is both more difficult than it seems and easier than it
seems. The reason for this is that many of your old skills will translate
in the end, but there will be some unexpected challenges along the way.
