Hi All,
At the very bottom, you will find the list of names I have already for the
tournament. Please check over the list, make sure all of your informationh
is correct, fill in anything that is missing. Phone numbers are not
necessary; Ive included only those which were sent to me. Some of you will
show two email addresses. If there is one you dont want used, please
indicate.
If you are receiving this email and have not yet signed up for the
tournament, please give it some consideration. Maybe you are new to
tournament play. Maybe you have been away from chess for a while. Maybe you
are new to skype. And maybe this is the first youve heard of the
tournament.
I will do a bit more thorough research this year than I did last year to
make sure that the group you are placed with is indeed a group of players
with similar strength. For those who are new to tournament play, this is
therefore an ideal time to get your feet wet.
Unsure about time commitments? I will set this up similarly to last year in
that you will play your games when you are able. You will have the names and
contact info for all of your opponents, and you will be free to schedule
your games as your schedule permits. There will be a time control, of
course. We will use the fairly common 30 moves in 60 minutes for each
player, and both players will receive an additional hour once each 30-move
threshold has ben reached. We will be playing through the holidays, through
semester breaks, etc, and from time to time, I expect that people will have
difficulty scheduling their matches. That is why, though there will be
listed start dates for each round, those dates will be primarily for my
benefit. I will use those dates to post progress reports. You will not be
penalized for playing rounds out of order or for playing rounds after the
posted round date has passed. In fact, I will be out of state for the last
half of December and will be unable to play at all during that time. So, if
you are even a little interested in playing a realtime tournament, this one
is probably most ideal to test your wings.
I will cut off at a number divisible by four or six. You will all be divided
into groups of four or six; I hate odd numbers, because they mean someone
getting a buy every round. If we divide into groups of four, I am
considering making the tournament a six-round affair where you will play two
games against each of your three opponents, once from each side of the
board. If we have six-player groups, then we will play a five-round
tournament, one game against each of your five opponents, and I will assign
colors.
As I mentioned earlier, I will do a bit more research this year to try to
ensure that there are no mismatched players. It may take me a bit of time to
cull through the various lists to establish playing strengths. In general, I
will use the ftp-chess rating. However, some of those ratings are not really
reflective of a players strength, and there are already more than a few on
the list with no ftp-chess rating. So, it may take me a bit of time to work
this out. I plan to post pairings by next Monday, 13 November. You can jhoin
the fray any time through the end of this week. Just be aware, last one in
stands a better chance of being cut in order to maintain an even number of
players. So, if you are new to this sort of thing or have been away for a
while, maybe arent sure about playing under a time control, be reassured
that wherever possible, we will use third-party timekeepers, and if there is
a third-party timekeeper, you wont even have to keep your own game score. I
hope youll give it some thought! I have 29 so far; Current list is below.
