Subject: [usbca_chess] Invitation To An Upcoming Tournament On Skype!
Chessplayers!
If you are a U.S. citizen or U.S. Resident, this invitation is for you! I have
spoken with friends from Italy, and we have conjured a little contest between
our two nations. We would like to have at least 15 or 20 players, from each
nation of course, who are brave enough to join our tournament. It works like
this:
We would use skype to communicate with each other. If you’re new to skype,
don’t worry. You will be sent a link by email. Clicking on that link will
launch your connection with skype. And skype is only for communicating. You
still use your own chessboard, just as if you were sitting across the table
from your opponent. If you don’t have skype but are interested in this
tournament, skype is free to download. You would need to create your skype
handle.
Time control will be probably game/90, maybe with a 10-second increment. In
case you’re not familiar, that means that each player has 90 minutes total to
complete the game. If we use the 10-second increment, that means that ten
seconds is added to your time with each move.
You’ll play at least two games against the same opponent, switching colors. In
the event of a draw, you would play a third game. Ultimately, your aim is to
score two points, so the maximum number of games you could be expected to play
is four, but that would only be if all four of your games ended in draws. You’d
have the month of March to complete your games, so working folks can use
evenings or weekends to schedule games.
All games will have a third-party time- and score-keeper who will manage the
clock, record the game moves, and also will intercede in the event of any
disputes. The timekeeper will also assist with translation, so you do not need
to worry if you know no Italian.
Scoring: The player first scoring two points earns one point for their team. In
the event that both players score two points, as described above, then each
team would receive a half point. The team with the most points wins!
Interested? Just reply to this email. And just think, this is a great
opportunity to reconnect with some fellow chessplayers, it’s a great
opportunity to Score One For The U.s., and, if you’re new to all this, it’s a
great opportunity to stick your toe into a whole new swimming hole! I’d love to
hear from you soon, so, give it some thought, and give it a shot!
Best regards,
Jim T
