All,
My sixth round game.
An incredibly irritating game. I had white against a 2117. Completely outplayed
him for the whole of the game. What a miserable experience for him to have to
sit and grovel for the entirety of the encounter. Won a pawn relatively easily,
after his Dutch-Defence structure collapsed rather quickly. The end-game is
simply poor for him.
So, having won the pawn in the end-game, the win should be rather trivia.
Amazingly, white started to go majorly wrong on move 46. An innocuous move. I
saw the plan of putting a pawn on g5 and then pushing the H-pawn, but I did not
realise that the utter blockade of the king-side was tenable for black. I
thought the putting of the H-pawn on yet another light-square would lead to me
winning a tempo somewhere and being able to round up all of the pawns or allow
the white king to penetrate. What I did not appreciate, was that the black king
has both the a8 square to run to and that he will gain tempo on the
light-squared bishop were it to try and control the a4-e8 diagonal and cover
both the a8 and e8 squares at the same time. An annoying situation where the
tempo required is not quite there and that black, despite being a pawn down,
has enough, especially with the a7-pawn, to hold it. Very annoying!
46. g4 is the simple way to play on and win. G4-g5 is then too strong with
h4-h5 to come.
Even at the end, with 81. Kxa7, white does not have enough to win it. I thought
about it for over 20 minutes, checked and double-checked, and happily, the
computer confirms, that it is only a drawn variation for white. I am glad I did
not risk it and go and lose it!
So, 4/6 now. I need to turn on the burners now. 3 wins now will take me to 7/9,
which will be excellent. Unlikely but possible. I have black verses a 2087
tomorrow, a draws type of player, who plays 1. D4 and sits on his position.
Game 6 below.
Take it easy
Chris
