Subject: [usbca_chess] Ftp-chess Swiss Update, Please Read!
Players,
I am currently building, or rebuilding, the ftp-chess 2020 Swiss tournament.
I am aware that some people dropped out of the tournament-for various
reasons. I am also aware that several games went unplayed in the first
round-and perhaps in the second first round. Ancient history.
Below, you will find the results as I have them. For the games that were
unplayed, regardless of the reasons, each player is awarded three points.
Players who wish to enter, or reenter, this tournament may do so. However,
you must respond to me by 23:00 UTC on Wednesday, 18 March. Players entering
or reentering the tournament will also receive three points for their first
round score. Call it a by-minimus! :) I will do my best to have second-round
pairings posted to the ftp-chess List by 23:00 UTC on Friday, 20 March.
Important! Those of you who see a question next to your name regarding
timekeeper points, respond to me by 23H UTC Wednesday to protect your
points!
Tournament rules
You will have three weeks to complete each round.
Number of rounds will depend on final count of players.
Pairings will be made according to Swiss protocols, that is, players will be
ranked based on rating according to like scores.
Rating used: I will use the most recent ftp-chess rating where available. If
no ftp-chess rating is available, I will look for a skype-chess rating since
these have also been calculated by our esteemed Johannes Grib. If no
ftp-chess or skype_chess rating is available, I will calculate a rating
based on the most recent ELOs posted by Olivier Deville. If none of these
sources provides a rating, I will assign a rating of 1000.
Time Controls: 30 moves in 60 minutes, with an additional 60 minutes awarded
to each player for each subsequent block of 30 moves.
Scoring: 10 points for a win; five points for a draw; two points for serving
as third-party timekeeper (Max available 8); one point for timing your own
game (Max TK points applies); two points for each player for using
freechess; and of course zero points for a loss!
Courtesies
Each and every player is expected to reach out to his or her opponent for
scheduling;
Scheduling offlist, that is, writing directly to your opponent instead of
addressing scheduling suggestions to the ftp-chess list is greatly
preferred;
If you have language or internet issues, make them known ASAP;
Availability of translators is extremely limited, so English is expected as
the primary language used;
Show up for your games. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you forfeit.
Apeals due to circumstances may be heard, but reschedules allowed after a
no-show will be handled individually and will be at the discretion of the TD
and the offended player;
You must make every effort to control noise in your surroundings. If you do
not have a quiet room available in which to play, please try to make family,
friends, etc, understand that their noise effects not only yourself but also
your opponent. It is understood that children and pets aren't always
controllable; do what you can, and, please, both players exercise some
tolerance and also some responsibility.
Adapted touch move rules apply. That is: speak your moves carefully and
clearly. Opponent, repeat the move promptly. Once a move has been stated and
repeated, it is binding so long as it is legal. If a move is stated but not
legal, the chess piece named must be moved, if possible, in some manner.
Example: the stated move was Knight delta 5. There is no legal Knight delta
5 on the board. The player must move a knight, nevertheless, so long as a
legal knight move is possible. If the player has two knights still on the
board and either knight can move, the player does have the option of moving
either knight, but the player must move a knight in this example. So, speak
your moves clearly and carefully.
Disputes
As always, third-party timekeepers are considered assistant TD's. As such,
their judgment is considered binding. Whether or not there is a third-party
TK, if a dispute arises, do not simply resign. Ask for an adjournment. Bring
the dispute to the attention of the TD as soon as possible. If a dispute
arises and one player requests an adjournment, the other player is expected
to comply. It is my intent to ensure that every player has the opportunity
to play chess in as comfortable an environment as possible. Tolerance and
cooperation are key elements. Let's make it a pleasant learning environment
and have some fun while playing chess! Current results follow.
