World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer
Hello everyone.
This contribution intrigued me so I've done a bit of internet digging. The
results may not be conclusive so if anyone wants to dig further than me they
are quite welcome to do so.
Firstly there is a lesser known but identical Bronze Bas Relief created by
sculptor Anthiony W Jones of New York during the mid 19th century.
Secondly both painting and relief both have different titles such as
Checkmate, One More Move, The Chessplayers and The Game of Life.
The painting is easier to examine than the brass relief so my observations
are based on looking at the former. There is in fact a Black Pawn on a3 in both
but it is difficult to see in the brass relief, and that's in the foreground!
The Devil, playing Black, seems to have more captured pices.to the side of
the board that the player of the White pieces does. This doesn't count for that
much because I'm sure we are all aware of how often material imbalance features
in practical play. Black also seems to have his pieces further advanced than
White who seems restricted to his back two ranks. Again this does not
necessarily indicate that White is at a disadvantage but Black may have the
initiative.
The pieces used are NOT regular Staunton style. The figures seem to be human
figures in the throes of different movements. The artist Frederich August
Moritz Retzsch lived from 1770 to 1857. The general introduction of Staunton
Style sets wasn't until 1849 so it's quite likely that Retzsch may never have
seen it. The board is orientated correctly with a light square in both plater's
bottom right corner.
Upon looking at the disposition of the Black pieces closely I count seven
different styles of both pieces and Pawns. This is awkward because of course we
should only have six, namely King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight and Pawn. Some
of the White forces are so closely bunched together it is difficult to see
individual pieces.
The legend about the picture having been seen by "a chess champion" is a
common one. One version qoutes Fischer, another quotes Morphy and there are
opportunities for every World Champion inbetween to have seen it. Several of
them have lived in Paris at one time of another. Of course it does not have to
have been a World Champion that was the subject of the legend.
The exact position is difficult to determine. Possibly an experienced player
staring at this for six hours might be able to work out which piece is
represented by which figure, but I would venture to suggest that this is
possibly a more difficult task than actually analysing the position.
However, the bottom line here is the moral. Even in the most difficult of
situations it may be possible to find salvation of sorts. Clearly this advice
is not restricted to just the chessboard.
Let us not forget that chess is just a game. May peace be with you, but if
you're just off to the club don't forget to take your pieces with you!
Regards,
Tyson

----- CHECKMATE
One of the things a lot of people don't know about World Chess Champion
Bobby Fischer is that his favorite hobby is visiting art galleries and
museums. Once while on vacation in Europe, he became captivated by one
particular painting called Checkmate
It was the picture of a chess game. On one side of the board was Satan
with a smug and sinister smile on his face. On the other side of the board
was a young man with tears running down his face and sweat pouring down his
forehead. He was biting his fingernails. Satan was reaching out to make the
last move. The young man looked terrified. Apparently, he thought he had
lost the game to Satan.
Again, the painting is called Checkmate. Satan smiled. The young man was
panicked. And as Satan reached out to make the last move, things seemed
hopeless for the young man.
After six hours of staring at the painting, Bobby Fischer said, "Bring me a
chess board." He set up the board exactly as it was depicted in the
painting. After a few moments, he began to smile. "Young man", he said, "I
wish you could hear me because I have some good news for you. Things aren't
as dark as they seem to be. I have studied this game for more than six
hours, and I have discovered that it's all right to allow the devil to make
his move. Because after he makes his move, I've found that there is one
more
move on the board!
Let him make his move. You'll be the one who says, 'Checkmate!' There is
one more move on the board."
Do you see what this means for you? You can live with the confidence that
your life is never checkmate. With Jesus there is always one more move. So
you can have the courage to face tomorrow, no matter what happens today.
For
with Jesus the darkness never overwhelms the light, evil never defeats
goodness, and death never overcomes life. Christ is risen, and so shall we.
Rise out of the depths of despair. Rise out of the depths of the grave.
Rise
out of the depths of whatever holds us back from lasting intimacy with God.
While Bobby Fisher never realized the true power of God on his side as an
atheist, he logically described a true attribute of God. God loves to do
the
seemingly impossible; when it seems as though there is no alternative to
defeat, no avenue of escape or no answer to a dire problem and we are
"pinned to the mat", then God pulls the carpet out from under the supposed
victor and soundly defeats the evil at its own game.
Would you join the side of a war that cannot win? How foolish to think that
just because the dark side announces, "Checkmate", the game is over; the
winning has just begun and God's win will last for eternity.
Get right with God, you will need Him to win your war very soon.
Think about this story today!!!
This story is from Reverend Dr. Gary Nicolosi:
Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters.
Not many of you were wise by human standards,
not many were powerful,
not many were of noble birth.
Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise,
and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong,
and God chose the lowly and despised of the world,
those who count for nothing,
to reduce to nothing those who are something,
so that no human being might boast before God.
1 Corinthians 1:26-29
Thanks in advance.
God bless,
Roger Khouri
