Hi,
Maybe one way to start practicing chess visualization is to try to play the
most basic endings in your head to see if you can checkmate. You would have
fewer pieces to keep track of. Maybe have a friend use a board to keep track of
the moves, or use WinBoard and set up a basic ending, and let it tell you when
you have an illegal move.
