Hi All,

There is an active Belted Kingfisher nest at Cleveland Rapids which is
easy to spot from the right place. The nest is on the opposite side of the
river from the park and is a short distance upstream from the head of the
rapids in a layer of sandy soil just above the cliff of dark rock. The
nest cannot be seen from the parking lot or from the gravel bar because
from that angle it is behind tree branches. To see it, walk south
(upstream) from the parking lot on the grassy field towards the fence and
stay at the edge of the woods. When you get close to the fence, you'll see
a conspicuous path that goes through the woods to the river bank. Take it
and you'll come out on the shore directly opposite the nest at the place
where the attached photograph was taken. Find the small waterfall of a
tributary stream on the opposite bank and look upstream about 150 feet and
you'll see a streaky column of light-colored sandy soil extending from the
top of the cliff down its face towards the shore. The active nest hole is
at the top of the column; presumably the column was produced when the birds
dug the hole and dropped the excavated material down the face of the
cliff. There is a second hole three to four feet above the first one which
may be an old nest hole. We saw both birds at the nest site yesterday
(April 22) but there isn't much action at present, perhaps because the
birds are incubating.
