For the first time I've noticed in 35 years, a HAIRY WOODPECKER visited our
yard in SE Roseburg (near Rose School) today. It was clearly larger than Downy
Woodpecker, with thicker bill longer than head, red nape of male, and unmarked
white outer tail feathers.
I'm happy to see this woodpecker even at higher elevations in conifer woods,
and surprised to see it in my yard feeding in the bark of a tall, woody
ornamental shrub. Juncos, Spotted Towhee and a Golden-crowned Sparrow were all
active at the same time as the woodpecker, on this rare sunny day between
storms.
