The whole of section 5 in the Rules of UEB is about grade 1 mode
indicators. In general:
- There are three grade 1 indicators: one for symbol (dots 56), one for
word (dots 56, 56), and one for passage (dots 56, 56, 56).
- The grade 1 terminator (dots 56,6) is used to indicate ending of grade
1 passages, and to terminate grade 1 word mode within a symbols-sequence.
- The numeric indicator also sets grade 1 mode until the next space,
hyphen, dash, or grade 1 terminator.

Hi Jerry,
For what it's worth, there is no grade 2 indicator for UEB literary
braille. Grade 2 (what used to be called 'contracted mode') is considered
as the default mode for UEB.
That is why we have 'grade 1 mode' -- we have to signal the reader that
the braille is a transliteration of print (symbol by symbol without
contractions, etc.).
Similarly, we have indicators to signal the reader when switching from UEB
to other braille codes (Nemeth, music, etc.) and then back to UEB. This is
why we have things like 'Nemeth in a UEB context' and 'music in a UEB
context', and special formatting rules for some schoolbook content in which
contractions (etc.) are not to be used.
