Hello Francesca,

I have just checked Guidelines to Technical Material, section 8.2 on print page
41 and all the examples seem fine to me.

So, let's pick apart the first example, cube root of 8 = 2:

Braille coding is:
⠰⠰⠩⠔⠼⠉⠼⠓⠬⠀⠐⠶⠀⠼⠃

So, first there are two dot 56's. This is the Grade 1 Word indicator and
indicates that everything up to the next space is in grade 1 mode.

Why is this here? Because the open square root sign and the power sign both
have grade 2 meaning (SH and IN contractions). They must both be in grade 1 in
order for them to have their mathematical meaning. Two signs, so two grade 1
indicators should be needed - so put them both at the front, to make a grade 1
word.

You'll notice I deliberately did not mention the close root indicator, the ING
sign. This also must be in grade 1 mode, but in this case, it is after a number
... a numeric indicator also sets grade 1 mode, up to the next space, hyphen or
dash; so it would have been covered, even without the grade 1 word at the front.

So, we then have dots 146, the open root sign.

Then we have power (dots 35) followed by number 3, this indicates a cube root.
The 3 in print is written above the "V" part of the square root sign, so
writing it as superscript is the way to code this in UEB.

Then, the second numeric indicator terminates the first number and thus
terminates the superscript. So the digit 8 is inside the root (i.e. in print,
under the horizontal bar of the square root sign).

Finally, the dots 346 is the close root indicator indicating the end of the
horizontal line in the print.

The rest, (space, equals space 2) I hope is straightforward.

So, the example in GTM is correct.

Note, that the UKAAF guidelines for this example would have put the whole lot
into a grade 1 passage (56-56-56 at the front and 56-3 at the end) because the
whole expression contains spaces. Both approaches are valid.

Now, if you put the superscript 3 first then technically, this superscript
occurs *before* the root and is not part of it.

I'd be very interested to get my hands on a BrailleNote and do some serious
testing...

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Dear James,
On page 41 of the technical primer section 8.2 cube roots.
The cube root of 8 = 2
The coding for this is confusing so first I want to check if it is correct.
Secondly the new maths software on Braille notes does not register the above
code.
In order to enter the sum the following layout is needed:
Dots 56 is followed by dots 3 5 superscript then number sign 3
Then open root sign 146 then the number sign 8 then the closed root sign 346
This is then correct
Unfortunately it does not correspond to the code in the primer
I intend to show the student the above method to enter on the Braillenote and
teach the student the at it will be read on hie exam paper!

Hello Tracy,

According to what I just read in the RNIB's Braillists' Manual (section
33):

Line numbers should follow print;
Line numbers should be at the left margin;
They should be written without the numeric indicator;
There should be two blank cells between the line number and the main
text.
You should allow enough room for the maximum number of digits for the
biggest line number on each page.

So, for example, it might look like this (using print):

5 Then spake I unto him saying
"Hast thou not seen how beautifully glides
the stream? Glistening clear as
crystal and gliding over stones,
in graceful and long descent until at
10 last it arrives at the ocean?"

(copy the above into Notepad for the layout to use a "fixed-pitch" font.

I hope this helps.

With best regards,

James.

Hello

I have a document in print where lines 5, 10, 15 etc are numbered to
the left hand side of the main text - how should this be done in braille,
layout wise?

Best wishes

Tracy
