Is it any more of a dependency hell than Mac OS X? At least in the open source 
world, people don't enforce arbitrary dependencies to force you to buy the 
latest OS upgrade. ;-)

Automake is really easy to build and you can have multiple versions installed 
at the same time.

Point taken. After I've got the next release out, I'll see what I can do to 
loosen the automake dependency (the configure script is a bit of a mess, 
anyway, and could use some work). All help in tracking bugs is greatly 
appreciated.
