Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a photo that I took this afternoon from our bridge. Maybe
everyone already knows about our Dippers, and if so forgive me, but if not,
we are lucky to have some of the most interesting birds in North America
living along our little stretch of the Rio Hondo, and they can often be seen
from the bridge.
The American Dipper is a drab looking little guy who lives an amazing life.
They live only along fast moving mountain streams in the American West, and
spend their entire lives within a few inches of the water. They nest at the
water’s edge, and their diet consists of the insect life that is under the
water in the stream. They perch on rocks in mid-stream, or on pieces of ice
in winter, and dive underwater for extended periods, wandering around on the
bottom eating passing insect larva. They are here all year.
So, here’s the Dipper that was hanging out by the bridge today; not a great
photo because I took it with my cell phone, but you’ll know what to look
for. If you see one perched in the river, you’ll soon see him disappear
underwater.
