Subject: [troop286] Family Life MB schedule and booklet
Hello Troop 286 Families
I am providing an opportunity for Scouts in Troop 286 to earn the Family Life
Merit Badge over the coming months in a group setting. We need to get started!
I have tentatively planned for 4 sessions, approximately 1 to 1-1/2 hour long
each as follows:
Monday June 20, 530pm (before the regular scout meeting) **THIS MONDAY!**
Monday July 25, 530pm (before the regular scout meeting)
Monday August 22, 7pm
Monday Sept 26, 600-830pm (This session will be loosely broken out into
individual ~15 minute "appointments" with each Scout to review final completion
of requirements before and during the regular Scout meeting. A sign up sheet
will be available at the August session.)
The following Scouts have expressed interest in participating:
Nate Bailey
Adam Cartwright
Max Colby
Aaron Doyle
Dylan Franck
Landon Gump
Brenden Hopping
Colby Keiser
Marshall Kiplinger
Jonathan North
I'd appreciate confirmation that your Scout still wishes to participate. If the
above schedule does not work, we can plan to work through the requirements
individually at another time.
This merit badge has several requirements that will take a considerable amount
of time to complete, including 90-day (12 weeks) tracking of home chores and
duties, and two family projects (one done by the scout and one by the scout and
his family), among other things. Scouts should be prepared to work hard and
stick with it for the long haul on this one!
MB Booklet: In the interest of saving money, I have scanned the current merit
badge booklet into a pdf file. You can decide if you want to print it, have
your scout read on the computer, or purchase the booklet at the scout store.
It's your choice, but each scout must read the booklet and have access to it
for reference.
I have copies of the merit badge workbook found free online (thank you Colbys!)
and I can pass those out for scouts to use on Monday.
***Prerequisites: Prior to our first session, Scouts should read (at least the
first 30 pages/half of) the booklet and complete their outline for Req 1 and
their list for Req 3. Our discussion will include the first 3 requirements.***
Scoutmaster Solch has given us the ok to start without his signature on the
blue cards, but boys should have a blue card filled out and get his signature
Monday at the regular meeting.
I plan to run our sessions as discussions rather than lectures. Scouts must be
able to talk intelligently about the subject. I am their counselor, not their
teacher! I will be taking notes as to who is participating and who is not.
Scouts must complete the requirements as they are written, and if the group
setting becomes problematic and scouts are not actively engaging, we will
reschedule sessions individually with those who wish to earn the badge at
another time. Scouts should arrive with a positive scouting attitude and be
ready to focus.
Please encourage your Scout to read this email himself!
If you have questions, please don't hesitate.
Thank you for the opportunity
