I find it amazing at how after two seasons of intensive mothing, new species continue to appear almost nightly. It is always exciting to check the sheets each morning because I never know what's going to appear next. This morning was no exception. Total numbers are way down because the season is winding down here in the mountains--cooler weather has set in and trees are beginning to show some color--hard to believe summer is behind us already! I had two lifers and 1 FOY today: 6005 *Moodna ostrinella* (Darker Moodna)--LIFER 9391 *Resapamea [Luperina] passer* (Dock Rustic)--FOY--this species feeds on dock (Rumex spp) which is abundant at my place; according to BugGuide, this species is northern in distribution occurring across Canada including the Arctic (!) and south in the east to New Jersey and Maryland. It has not been recorded for Great Smokies NP so I may have the only occurrence for North Carolina. 9961 *Anathix ralla* (Dotted Sallow)--LIFER--I may have overlooked this species before due to its similarity to Bicolored Sallow (Sunira bicolorago); the dots below the pm line are diagnostic. Others should keep an eye out for this species and check closely all your Bicolored Sallows. -- J. Merrill Lynch Echo Valley Farm Watauga County, NC Elevation: 3,400 feet
