Variable Carpet Moth is clearly a much better match.
It imediately came to mind when I first saw it.
I don't know how I got so far off track when I worked it.

I believe it maybe 7329 Variable Carpet Moth (Anticlea vasiliata) I have 
collected a few early in the year.

It was at Steele Creek Park in Bristol, TN (Sullivan County) on 3/9/12.
